PhD Project: Characterisation of molecular and histological effects of MP particles in tissue (sections) of aquatic and terrestrial model organisms
Microplastics (MPs) are present everywhere in the environment and are therefore also taken up by organisms. Several toxic effects following MP uptake have already been reported; however, it remains unclear whether these effects occur upon initial contact with the tissues of the digestive tract or only after translocation into systemic tissues. Furthermore, the specific particle properties responsible for these toxic effects are still unknown. Therefore, my project aims to correlate local histological and molecular changes in tissues directly with individual MP particles. To achieve this, various spectroscopic techniques, electron microscopy, tissue clearing, and classical histology will be applied in terrestrial and aquatic model organisms.
