Project: Investigating the effects of microplastic particle properties on their interaction with and internalization into cells
I am interested in the interactions between microplastic particles (MPs) and cells. In the environment, MPs differ in many properties, such as their shape, size, polymer type or surface chemistry. Which properties are decisive for MP-cell interaction and subsequent internalization is still poorly understood. To investigate MP-cell interactions, I use a microfluidic setup which allows me to analyze particles sedimenting onto cells as well as their adhesion to cells under a well-defined flow. By using different types of particles, I can probe the effects of various particle properties on binding kinetics and adhesion. I investigate the uptake of MPs by conducting live cell microscopy as well as confocal microscopy of fixed samples. This allows me to monitor the uptake process as well as possible downstream effects.
