Project: Effects of microparticles on aquatic model macrofauna depending on particle properties: comparison of microplastics to natural particles
Microplastics (MP) have been shown to cause sublethal effects in freshwater organisms. Such reductions in individual fitness can lead to the reduction or loss of key functional traits, ultimately damaging ecosystem functioning. In my project, I investigate how the physical and chemical properties of MP influence freshwater keystone species, such as water fleas (Daphnia), and their interactions with other organisms in the ecosystem.
To address this, I study life-history parameters in both laboratory and outdoor mesocosm experiments, comparing the effects of MP with those of natural particulate matter. In addition, I study MP effects on biotic interactions, including inducible morphological and behavioural defences in Daphnia, to shed light on the impacts on interspecies interactions and chemical communication. The results of the project will improve our understanding of the key drivers of MP ecological impacts to help inform the development of environmentally safer materials.
